Get It Up is the first track on The Time’s first album The Time, and, a month before the album’s release, Get It Up was released as the album’s first single. As such, Get It Up is the first song to be released credited to The Time. In 1984, it was included as the second track on the UK 12" version of Ice Cream Castles, the first single from The Time’s third album Ice Cream Castle. The song was written by Prince, although the album does not contain any writing credits. As with the rest of the album, the recording mostly features only Prince and Morris Day, although Dr. Fink contributes a synth solo.
Basic tracking took place on 11 February 1981 at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Get It Up was recorded before Prince offered Morris Day to form The Time. The song was offered to the band Brick who turned it down.
