Purple Rain was the first Prince home video to be released and his first movie released in Home Video format. It was released on 19 November 1984 in the USA with an 'R' rating. When released in the United Kingdom and Australia the film was rated unsuitable under 15. Of note, the movie was rated unsuitable under 12 in the Benelux from 1999 onward.

Depending on the country, running times varied from 113 minutes in the USA, to 111 minutes in Japan, and 107 minutes in Europe.

The home video was a commercial success in the USA, reaching position 1 in Billboard Top Videocassette Sales chart and in Billboard Top Videodisks charts, and position 2 in Billboard Top Videocassette rentals chart.

In 2004 a 20th Anniversary Collector Edition was released, featuring a bonus DVD containing footage from the MTV premiere, 8 music videos, 3 documentaries and 3 different trailers.

This latter configuration was retained when the movie was released on HD DVD and BluRay format in 2007.
