I Am is the first track on Elisa Fiorillo’s second album, I Am, and, shortly before the album’s release, a remix of the track, known as Am I Dub II, was included on some versions of On The Way Up, the album’s first and only commercial single. The track was written by Prince, David Z. Rivkin and Levi Seacer, Jr., and was produced by David Z. Rivkin. Prince does not appear as a musician on the track.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in mid-to-late September 1989, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. David Z. Rivkin and Levi Seacer, Jr. were already working on the track with Elisa Fiorillo, and Prince dropped by. Unable to get into a studio of his own, since they were all booked, he helped them finish writing the track, and later contributed to On The Way Up, as well as contributing three other tracks.
