Incense And Candles is the fifth track on Prince’s 31st studio album 3121.
Specific recording dates are not known, but it was likely recorded in March 2005 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Of note is that this is the first Prince album track to contain vocals by Támar Davis (although Beautiful, Loved And Blessed had already been released on the Black Sweat single the previous month). She discussed the song’s recording in an interview in 2016: "We were at the recording facility the rehearsal facility Burbank (...). It was me, Cora, Josh, Morris, and Frank McComb. And I’ll never forget it. I got a call, and he was just like, "Hey, what are you doing?" And I’m like, "I’m in rehearsal... The rehearsal that you have us in. And he was like, "Oh, well, can you get on a flight tomorrow and come do some recordings?" And I said, "Of course, Okay." So, I kept flying out there. I would leave our rehearsals from LA and fly to Minneapolis. And we would just record. I think we were recording The Word. I think we started recording, maybe Incense And Candles before I was really on incense and candles."
The track was included as the fifth track on a late 2005 configuration of 3121, followed by Incense And Candles before switching places with it while Streets Of Panama was removed from the album before its release.
