Leader Of The Band is the first track on an EP sold by Sheila E. at the merchandise stand of two shows she performed at Yoshi’s, San Francisco, CA, USA, on 15 August 2010. The song is written by Prince and Sheila E., and he appears on vocals and keyboards.
In 2013, Sheila E. included an edited version of the track on her album Icon.
While a specific recording date or studio (in or near Oakland) were not known, a recording tape photographed at Paisley Park Studios lists it as 1 October 2005 alluding the song was recorded five years before initial release.
The track was intended for an album by The E Family tentatively called Love’s All Around. This album was developed over the years and released as Now & Forever in 2011, but Leader Of The Band was not included on the final configuration. Instead it was included on Sheila E.’s 2013 album Icon.
