Lovin’ Cup is the second track on 94 East’s first collection of studio recordings Minneapolis Genius, featuring Prince on guitar and synthesizer. The track has featured on every collection of 94 East’s early recordings. In 1992, it was included as the second track on the second disc of Minneapolis Genius - Featuring Prince. In 1995, the original, previously-unreleased, version was included as the third track on the first disc of Symbolic Beginning (re-released in 1999 as The Legends Collection). In 2000, it was included as the third track on 94 East Featuring Prince. Also in 2000, it was included as the first track on the second disc of One Man Jam. In 2002, it was included as the third track on the first disc of If You Feel Like Dancin’.

A preliminary version of the song was recorded in Summer 1978 at Sound 80, Minneapolis, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions as Dance To The Music Of The World and Just Another Sucker). Sue Ann Carwell added vocal overdubs soon after the original recording unbeknownst to Willie. The song was considered for her first album but Pepé Willie prevented her from doing so.

As with the other tracks included on Minneapolis Genius, additional recording was done by Pepé Willie at Blue Wave Recording Studio, St. Philip, Barbados.
