Purple And Gold was first available as an audio stream on www.vikings.com, the website of the National Football League team the Minnesota Vikings (a clip of the song was played earlier that day on Fox News in Minneapolis, Minnesota).

Basic tracking took place on 17 January 2010 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, during the evening after Prince attended the Minnesota Vikings NFC Divisional Playoff game, where the Vikings beat the Dallas Cowboys 34-3. Purple And Gold was recorded during sessions that yielded material for the 20Ten album but was not considered for this project.

The song is a traditional football fight song, with a slow beat and chanted lyrics. According to engineer James "Fluff" Harley, Prince wanted to do a Queen-like stadium anthem (much like We Are The Champions). Lines like The veil of the sky draws open. The roar of the chariots touch down and We come in the name of the purple and gold. All of the odds r in r favor demonstrate its team-supporting nature.

  • After the Vikings lost their play off game this song was made for, against the New Orleans Saints, Sheila E. (a Saints fan) posted a mocking internet video (viewable here), where she is dressed to look like Prince circa 1985, complete with painted on thin mustache and a mole on the cheek. Over a rudimentary Minneapolis sound-style drum-beat she poses in a cocky manner while texts boasting about how the Saints are better than the Vikings were superimposed over the screen. Sheila can meanwhile be seen trying to look sultry (as Prince), doing goofy dance moves. This was done in good fun as Prince and Sheila had been on good terms around the time.
