| A softcover songbook compilation of sheet music for the 9 songs featured on Prince’s eleventh full-length studio album, Batman, the motion picture soundtrack to the movie Batman.
Musical notation For each song, chord diagrams for six-string guitar are published above the musical staff, which comprises a top stave for the vocal melody and the main lyric running beneath. Spoken words are published in italics. Under these are the complementary treble and bass staves for piano, all in standard musical notation. For some of the songs (The Future, Electric Chair, The Arms of Orion, Vicki Waiting and Batdance), the lyrics to the earlier part of the song are provided aligned to the melody, with additional lyrics printed at the end of the score (to be sung over repeated parts of the published music. In common with many songbooks for popular artists, the music and lyrics are not provided as accurate transcriptions of the original album recording. In particular, musical passages of some songs and some of Prince's lead vocal and spoken words are often not included. The arrangement for each song is presented in the same key as the original recording. Design and other content The songbook seeks to replicate the appearance of the album cover and content. The book's front cover replicates the Batman TH logo which dominates the album cover. The original album artwork did not have the title printed on the front cover. Instead, a black oval sticker was added to the album cover (or any shrink wrap in which it was sold) with text that read 'BATMAN' (in yellow), 'PRINCE' beneath in smaller white lettering and trademark, copyright and catalog code information. With no such sticker or printed copy of it used for the book, the title 'BATMAN TM' printed above the logo. Largely replicating the album back cover, the 'BATMAN TM' title from the front cover is now positioned above the song titles (in white) and basic movie credits (in purple). The back cover footer includes publisher details (corporate logos and contact address, left) and book price and catalog code (right), all in white. The book spine is black with white lettering that reads: 'BATMAN TM MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK PRINCE' (top), 'TM and (C) 1989 DC Comics Inc.' (center), 'Printed in U.S.A.' (towards the bottom) and catalog code at the bottom. Page 1, as the title page, has the 'BATMAN TM' title above 'MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK'. Text that appeared on the back cover of the album has now been moved to the middle of the title page. It reads: 'Produced, Arranged, Composed and Performed by PRINCE except "The Arms of Orion" Composed and Performed by PRINCE with SHEENA EASTON and "Scandalous" Composed by Prince with John L. Nelson.' Towards the foot of the page are logo illustration and photography credits, above text that reads: 'TM & (C) 1989 DC Comics Inc. "BATMAN," "VICKI VALE," "BRUCE WAYNE," and the "JOKER," are trademarks of DC Comics Inc.' and a Copyright notice for the publishers at the bottom of the page. Pages 2 and 3 comprise a photographic montage (against a black background) of 8 promotional stills mostly of the movie's leading characters, againtst a black background. Page 4 is the Contents page. Centred in the top half of a black background are the song titles, each in its album sequence above the corresponding page number, all in white lettering. The lower half of the page features a photograph of Prince (credited to Jeff Katz on page 1). Cropped versions of this and three of the photographs from the montage on pages 2 and 3 were previously featured on the album vinyl inner sleeve. The sheet music starts on page 5, with each song printed in the running order of the album. For the first page of each song's sheet music, the song title is printed (top center in bold) using the album's chosen typography, and beneath reads, 'Words and Music by' followed by the credited writer(s). Each title page footer also has 'WB MUSIC CORP. and CONTROVERSY MUSIC' copyright notice for the year of the album release. The inside front and back covers are plain black. | ||||
