Be My Fortune Teller is an unreleased single by 94 East planned for release in 1978 on Poydor Records. The planned B-side was I Just Wanna Be Your Man (an alternative title for 10:15). Although Prince is only a musician on this single, as a member of the band 94 East, and did not participate in writing any of the tracks on either side, the single is referenced here for completeness.
Be My Fortune Teller was written by Hank Cosby with Audrey Grossman Landau and produced by Cosby and Pepé Willie. 94 East signed a contract with Polydor Records to release this single under Cosby’s wing. This version features Colonel Abrams on lead vocals, but the single would still have been released under the 94 East moniker although he was not a member of the band. A test pressing was produced in July 1977, but all plans were abandoned when Hank Cosby was let go from Polydor in June 1978.
Both songs were released in different forms in the months that followed. Be My Fortune Teller was re-recorded, without any involvement from Prince, and was issued as a single by the group SofTouch. The track was also included as the fourth song on their self-titled album released that same year.
I Just Wanna Be Your Man was re-recorded as I Just Wanna Be Your Lovin’ Man by the The Imperials and released in August 1979 as the b-side for their single Fast Freddie The Roller Disco King (and also as the b-side of a reissue of their Goin’ Out Of My Head single the same year). It is unclear if Prince appears on that version as a guitarist, however.
Both tracks were later reworked by Pepé Willie and included on the 94 East album (full title 94 East Featuring 10:15 & Fortune Teller Remix With Prince On Guitar) in 2003.
The versions planned for this single in 1978 remain unreleased.
