Standing At The Altar, by Margie Cox, is the seventh track on the album 1-800 New Funk (a compilation of mostly-unreleased music largely written and produced by Prince/ , recorded by other Paisley Park Records artists), and, later in 1994, Standing At The Altar was available as the album’s only commercial single, available in Europe only. Around the time of the album’s release, however, it was issuded as a 7" promo with Love Sign on the flip side. The song was written by Prince (credited as such, even though it was released while he used the name ), and produced by Mr. Hayes and Greg Sain.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in July 1991, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The lyrics are inspired by the love relationship between Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland when she unexpectedly broke-up with him three days before their planned wedding date in June 1991. The track was intended for a planned solo project by Margie Cox (after the Flash album, for which she sung lead vocals, was abandoned), but this project remained unfinished.
