The Everlasting Now is the 13th track on Prince’s 24th album The Rainbow Children, his first album after reverting to the name Prince. In 2002, a live version was included as the fourth track on the second disc of Prince’s first live album One Nite Alone... Live! (along with Xenophobia, Extraordinary, Avalanche, Family Name, Raspberry Beret, Wanna B Ur Lover, Diamonds & Pearls, The Beautiful Ones, Nothing Compares 2 U and How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore from the same show). A short reprise, titled The Everlasting Now (Vamp), was included as the ninth and final track on the accompanying album One Nite Alone... The Aftershow: It Ain’t Over.
Specific recording dates are unknown, but it is likely that basic tracking took place in late 2000 or early 2001 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Horn overdubs were recorded on 8 February 2001, also at Paisley Park Studios (on the same day as horn overdubs on Everywhere and Mellow). The album’s narrative ends with the narrator stating "from this day forward ’Til times indefinite, those who love Christ are the ones who benefit. All the players' ice melted into one platinum chain and in a downward spiral it dripped down the drain."
