The Love We Make is the eleventh track on the third disc of Prince’s 19th album Emancipation, the third album credited to SymbolSmallerBlue.png. Prince has said that he used the song to "speak to the spirit of a friend lost to drugs"; it is believed that this refers to Jonathan Melvoin, Wendy and Susannah Melvoin’s brother, keyboard player for The Smashing Pumpkins, who had played on both Around The World In A Day and Parade, and who played keyboard in the live line-up of The Family. Melvoin died of a heroin overdose in New York City on 12 July 1996.

While specific recording dates are unknown, it is likely that the track was recorded between mid-July (following Jonathan Melvoin’s death) and early August 1996 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (on the same day as The Divine).
