Twelve is the fourth track on Madhouse’s second and final album 16. Twelve was written and produced by Prince (credited only to Madhouse), with saxophone and musical input by Eric Leeds.
Basic tracking took place on 31 July 1987, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (the day after Eleven, Fifteen, Ten, Ten And ½, and three instrumentals later named Night Owl, Overnight, Every Night and Andorra, and the same day as another instrumental later named Kenya); it is likely that the title was assigned only after the final sequence had been arranged for the album.
