Sixteen is the eighth and final track on Madhouse’s second and final album 16. Sixteen was written and produced by Prince and Eric Leeds (credited only to Madhouse).

Although the instrumental was included in the unreleased short film Hard Life shot in late March 1987 and performed on the Sign O’ The Times Tour on which Madhouse was the opening act, basic tracking did not take place until late July or early August 1987 at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
