Sixteen is the eighth and final track on Madhouse’s second and final album 16. Sixteen was written and produced by Prince and Eric Leeds (credited only to Madhouse).
Although the instrumental was included in the unreleased short film Hard Life shot in late March 1987 and performed on the Sign O’ The Times Tour on which Madhouse was the opening act, basic tracking did not take place until late July or early August 1987 at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The title was assigned after the final sequence had been arranged for the album.
The track opens and closes with sampled lines of dialogue by John Marley as Jack Woltz from the 1972 movie The Godfather (a movie also sampled on Eleven and Thirteen).
