Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) is the seventh track on Prince’s fifth album 1999, and, eleven months after the album’s release, it was included as the b-side of the album’s fourth single, Automatic, released in Australia only. On 31 October 2013, a rehearsal recording of Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), recorded on 30 October 2013 at Paisley Park Studios, was made available on the 3rdEyeGirl YouTube account as a static video with artwork by Stella Blu. On 1 November 2013, the same rehearsal recording was made available on the 3rdEyeTunes.com. A different early take of the song was released in 2019 as the eleventh track on the Vault Tracks part 1 disc of a Super Deluxe Edition edition of the 1999 album. Basic tracking of the initial version took place at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, in mid-April 1982. Prince mixed the song on 28 April 1982 (on the same day as recording How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore, a day after an original, unused recording of Raspberry Beret and four days before Automatic) at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. He then proceeded to record the song over the next couple of days resulting in the version that was released on 1999. It was made to replicate the original mix from the time the song was initially tracked, as much as possible. So even when a slightly different mix of this track might exist, the now released version is not considered a true alternate mix of the track.
