Something Funky (This House Comes) was initially recorded as Something This House Funky Comes on 7 September 1990 at Smile Garage Studio in Tokyo, Japan (on the same day as initial versions of Horny Pony and Call The Law). The song notably has a band rap where Tony M. introduces the NPG band members. It is unclear if the original September 1990 version already has this specific rap, but if it did it would not have mentioned Tommy Barbarella on keys, as he wasn’t in the band yet at this point. Levi Seacer, Jr. was referred to as the band’s bass-man: ‘the man with the fingers and the sonic blast. And the boom…’ The song was worked on further in a later session at Larrabee Sound Studios in North Hollywood, California, presumably in October 1990. This version had Elisa Fiorillo’s vocals as placeholder for Rosie Gaines (who at this point was already named in the band-rap). In a session on 14 November 1990 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota, Something Funky (This House Comes) was probably extended for a potential 12” version, and also updated once more to included Sonny T. in the band-introduction as well, with Levi Seacer, Jr. — now the band’s guitar player — omitted from it. This extended take was remixed by Michael Koppelman in January 1991 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota. The 7-minute remix version was finally released as Something Funky (This House Comes) (Band Version) in October 2023 as the seventh track of Vault Tracks part 2, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Diamonds And Pearls (Super) Deluxe Edition. A 4-minute version of the original 1990 version (but updated to already name Tommy Barbarella, but not yet Sonny T. and including Rosie Gaines’ vocals) was included as the eleventh track on a late December 1990, configuration of Diamonds And Pearls, but was removed for later configurations, and remained unreleased at the time. However, the song was performed live at some shows in early 1991, including at the Rock in Rio II Festival on 19 January 1991 (a.m.) that performance was broadcast on radio and television.
