The Dance Electric was the first single to be released from André Cymone's third album A.C., released four weeks before the album. The single contained two different edits of the track. The b-side, Red Light, did not involve Prince.

The single was released in the USA, the UK and Europe, and reached number 10 on the US Billboard Black Chart, marking his biggest hit to date; it failed to make the Pop Chart, however. It also reached number 8 on Billboard Hot Dance/Disco - Club Play chart.
