4 The Tears In Your Eyes was initially recorded during the soundcheck of the Purple Rain Tour show on 1 February 1985 at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Basic tracking for the version released on the We Are The World album took place the next day, 2 February 1985, on a day off of the tour.

The video version was recorded on 4 June 1985 at SIR Los Angeles, Hollywood, California, and premiered on 13 July 1985 during the world-wide Live Aid event.

The song Hello alludes to the recording of this song in lieu of participating in the all-star recording of the song We Are The World, stating:

"I told them that I didn’t want to sing / but I'd gladly write a song instead".
