Do Your Dance is the sixth track on the maxi-single of Cream, the second single from Prince’s 13th album Diamonds And Pearls (the first album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation). While loosely based on the song Cream, including using a re-recording of the chorus, this can be considered a song in its own right. The track features significant new input by Prince and the New Power Generation and a new vocal by Jevetta Steele, a vocal sample and a synth line borrowed from Rosie Gaines’s then unreleased song I Want U (the original version from late 1989). Specific recording dates are unknown, but it is likely that recording took place in September-October 1991 (along with Cream (N.P.G. Mix), Things Have Gotta Change (Tony M. Rap), 2 The Wire (Creamy Instrumental) and Get Some Solo). Housebangers, Q In Doubt (Instrumental) and Ethereal Mix, three other songs from the same sessions that were released on the same maxi-single of Cream as seventh, eighth and ninth tracks respectively, are essentially mixes of Do Your Dance and are not considered songs in their own right. The track Do Your Dance featured on the Cream maxi-single as Do Your Dance (KC’s Remix) was mixed and co-produced by Keith "K.C." Cohen. The Housebangers remix has additional production and mixing by Junior Vasquez. The Q In Doubt remix is labeled an instrumental, but the track contains various spoken word and chanted segments in the background. Following on from the first two tracks of the maxi-single, Ethereal Mix contains the third and final telephone segue, in which a prank call is made asking someone for their views on the song Cream. It contains edits by Dave Friedlander.
