Funky is an unreleased instrumental track recorded on 13 November 1989, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MA, USA.
The song uses a sample of Funky by The Chambers Brothers (from their 1970 album New Generation). This is the same sample that is used on the 1989 song I Left My Wallet In El Segundo by A Tribe Called Quest. It is unknown if Prince heard I Left My Wallet In El Segundo before he used the sample himself. Though this is likely.
The track also samples clips of Miles Davis playing trumpet from several different recordings (which have not been identified), with Prince playing keyboards and guitar.
Prince recorded the track to suggest the musical direction that Davis might want to consider in future recordings, but when the track was sent, Davis was not enthusiastic, and he is not believed to have done anything with it.
In 1994 Prince and the New Power Generation recorded a proper cover version of the The Chambers Brothers' song (see Funky for details of that track).
