Funknroll is the twelfth and final track on Prince’s 36th album Plectrumelectrum (the first by Prince and 3rdEyeGirl), as well as the eleventh track on Prince’s 37th album Art Official Age (in remixed form).

The track was first mentioned by blogger Dr. Funkenberry on 31 July 2013 (along with a cover version by Prince of Alice Smith’s Another Love), before its live debut four days later.

On 4 March 2014, Prince and 3rdEyeGirl performed the track on The Arsenio Hall Show TV show; a studio version was premiered two days later (along with Fallinlove2nite) on radio station 102.3 KJLH, based in Los Angeles, California.

Two weeks before the album’s release, on 18 September 2014, the Art Official Age remix was made available to purchase on Amazon.com. The next day the track was made available to download on iTunes as preorder advance track bonus while the preorders made on the official website were granted an email with a download link.

On 18 November 2014 a lyrics video for Funknroll was premiered on Warner Bros. Records YouTube account.

Basic tracking for the studio version is assumed to have taken place in mid-to-late July 2013, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

  • The lyrics include the phrase "anotha motha furtha", a variation on the title of the Mother’s Finest album Another Mother Further, on which Baby Love (released as a live version by Prince on Indigo Nights) first appeared. The album also includes a track titled Hard Rock Lover, which may have inspired Prince’s own Hardrocklover.
  • While not being a single, the track entered SNEP Top Singles chart on 15 September 2014 at position 113. It remained in the chart only one week. It also entered the Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales in the USA on 4 October 2014 at position 23 for a week.
