Love 89 is the sixth track on Patti LaBelle's second MCA Records album Be Yourself. The song was co-written (with Sheena Easton), produced, and largely performed by Prince.
Basic tracking took place on 15 April 1988 at Paisley Park Studios (on the same day as Fuchsia Light). Initially the song leaned heavily on The Line and uses many of the same samples. The sound of it was changed before release and Patti LaBelle vocal overdubs, which she recorded with Prince on 21 May 1988 at Paisley Park Studios (on the same day she recorded lead vocal overdubs for Yo Mister).
