Syndicate was a promotional release connected with Prince's seventh album Purple Rain (the first album to be credited to Prince and the Revolution), although the only musical track to be included on the single was Another Lonely Christmas, which was not included on the album.
The b-side contains seven short messages by Prince, Apollonia and Sheila E. designed to be played by radio stations before their music. Prince introducing Purple Rain is an audio clip from the movie Purple Rain. The single was intended purely for radio stations, and has a "not for sale" message on the label.
