2 Nigs United 4 West Compton is the seventh song on Prince’s sixteenth album “The Black Album” (originally planned for release as his tenth album, albeit with no artist credit).
In 2002, a live version (almost completely different from the original) was included as the fourth track on the live release One Nite Alone... The Aftershow: It Ain’t Over.
Basic tracking took place on 7 December 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California, as an untitled jam with Sheila E. following the recording of Walkin’ In Glory.
After mixing part of the still untitled jam into Walkin’ In Glory, Prince further developed the song, mixing and overdubbing it two days later, at which time Sheila E. came up with a title for it.
Along with Bob George and Le Grind, the jam was recorded for a birthday party Prince was hosting for Sheila E. on 11 December 1986.
As the song’s original recording predates Cat starting to work with Prince, it is assumed that her voice in the intro, as well as the male voices (likely those of Greg Brooks and Wally Safford) were recorded later, likely in an October 1987 session when Prince finished off work on what was to be “The Black Album”.
