2gether is the eleventh track (eighth song) on the New Power Generation’s first ’solo' album Gold Nigga (the tenth track and seventh song on later pressings of the CD). At around the same time as the album’s release, 2gether had a limited release as the album’s first and only single, available at shows on the Act II tour and in The New Power Generation Store in Minneapolis and London. In 1994, a slightly edited version of the song (removing the reference to "1993") was included as the sixth track on the album 1-800 New Funk (a compilation of mostly-unreleased music largely written and produced by Prince/ , recorded by other Paisley Park Records artists). Around the time of the album’s release, it was also included as the b-side of a promotional 7" single of Love Sign (which was attributed to Nona Gaye and ).
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in May 1993, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, as the final song recorded for the album. The song was premiered during a party for Prince fans in Detroit on 5 June 1993 by Paisley Park Records promoter Billy Sparks (just two days before Prince changed his name to ).
