- Adonis is a name most commonly associated with the Greek mythological character who was lover of goddesses, Aphrodite and Persephone. The name, Bathsheba, is usually associated with the historical character (as recorded in both Christian and Judaic religious texts), who committed adultery with King David of Israel (before their marriage, which followed the death of her first husband, Uriah). The names were likely chosen for the two characters in the song as archetypes of youthful beauty.
