Colleen is an instrumental recorded on 15 January 1982 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California during recording sessions for The Time’s second album What Time Is It? (the day after International Lover and The Walk, and four days before Wild And Loose). The track may have simply been a studio experiment, however, and not intended for The Time.
In a 2019 interview, engineer Peggy McCreary talked about the origin of the track’s name, explaining that he had recorded it at the end of a session and McCreary asked what the track should be called on documentation. “He said, ‘What’s your middle name?' I said ‘Colleen.' He said, ‘Name it “Colleen.” ' The song never got finished; it never had lyrics.”
The instrumental was discarded at the time, but was released in 2019 as the seventh track on the Vault Tracks part 1 disc of a Super Deluxe Edition edition of the 1999 album. The liner notes also note that the track was revisited by Prince in April 1993, although no additional information is given about whether further recording took place.
