Cookie Jar is an unreleased song recorded on 12 and worked on again on 13 November 1988, during two days off from the Lovesexy Tour (between shows in Oakland and Seattle), at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
This song was long incorrectly attributed to be a straight-forward cover version of the 1976 track Cookie Jar by Fuzzy Haskins (from the 1976 album A Whole Nother Thang), but (like the Parlet cover of the song), it only re-uses the lyrics to the chorus I don’t know what He’ll do witcha when He getcha, Put you in his cookie jar, save you for a rainy day. Musically the song is different and the verses also seem to be original lyrics by Prince. The track also contains screams sampled from When Doves Cry.
Prince sent the master tape of the song to George Clinton and asked for his input. It is not known if this song was intended for The Cinderella Theory, George Clinton’s first album on Paisley Park Records released in 1989 which ultimately contained no Prince input. Before the session began, the first minute of the recording was accidentally erased by Clinton’s engineer, when the two inch tape was striped with tones (which were often recorded at the beginning of analog tapes as part of a calibration process for the tape machine). After this embarrassing incident, George Clinton decided not to work on this song. It is unknown if, but unlikely that Prince re-recorded this first portion.
The song remains unreleased.
