Basic tracking took place on 5 January 1985 or 6 January 1985 (estimate) at Master Sound Studios, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, while in Atlanta for dates on the Purple Rain Tour. Overdubs were done later in Houston, Texas (Le Mobile Studios Mobile @ The Summit) and Cincinnati, Ohio (5th Floor Recording Studio).

In 2019, Prince’s own version was released as the thirteenth track on the posthumous album Originals.

  • Dear Michaelangelo’s title contains a misspelling of the Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, commonly known as Michelangelo. It is likely this misspelling was unintentional, but it is consistent across the single and album release.
