Don’t Say U Love Me is the tenth track on Martika’s second album Martika’s Kitchen. In 1997, it was included as the eleventh track on the compilation album The Best Of Martika: More Than You Know. In 2005, it was included as the fifth track on the compilation album Toy Soldiers: The Best Of Martika.
Tracking took place on 13 February 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The working title for the track was Martika Jam (or Martika Jam Groove as listed on a tape photographed in Prince’s vault). In the liner notes for the expanded 2018 re-release of Martika’s Kitchen [Reheated Edition], Martika discussed the song’s recording: "This was one of the songs which morphed from one version to another. Prince liked my lyrics on this, and decided to funktify it on his unique way. Our basic contact throughout my L.A. & N.Y. sessions was over the phone."
In Spring 1991, Martika overdubbed her lead vocals and her musicians and vocalists added overdubs to the track, in New York and Los Angeles.
Prince’s version of Don’t Say U Love Me was released in October 2023 as the eleventh track of Vault Tracks part 2, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition. This version was sourced from a cassette copy (his original voice was wiped from the master).
