Electric Intercourse was released posthumously in 2017, as the fourth track on the second disc (titled From The Vault & Previously Unreleased) of Purple Rain Deluxe. Six weeks before the album's release, the track was released for download as a preview of the album.
While specific recording dates have not been confirmed, basic tracking took place in July 1983, most likely at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
A live version was recorded on 3 August 1983 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota (during the same concert where live versions of Let's Go Crazy, Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star and Purple Rain were also recorded). Prince used this live version when adding overdubs to the track in mid-September 1983 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
It is likely the track was originally planned to be included on the album Purple Rain (and in the movie Purple Rain) as either the 'studio version' or in the same overdubbed-live format as I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star and Purple Rain. A few days after recording overdubs however, Prince recorded The Beautiful Ones, which replaced Electric Intercourse.
During Prince: A Celebration in June 2000, computer screens at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, offered names of a selection of tracks which users could vote on for inclusion on Crystal Ball Volume II, and while Electric Intercourse was chosen by fans, the project was ultimately abandoned.
While a solo recording, it is listed here as a Prince and the Revolution track as it was released as a bonus track on the Purple Rain Deluxe album, which is credited to Prince and the Revolution.
