Electric Intercourse was released posthumously in 2017, as the fourth track on the second disc (titled From The Vault & Previously Unreleased) of Purple Rain Deluxe Edition and Deluxe Expanded Edition. Six weeks before the album’s release, the track was released for download as a preview of the album.

Basic tracking took place on 14 January 1983 in Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California.

A live version was recorded seven months later on 3 August 1983 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota (during the same concert where live versions of Let’s Go Crazy, Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I’m A Star and Purple Rain were also recorded). Prince used this live version when adding overdubs to the track in mid-September 1983 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
