Hot Thing is the eighth track on the first disc of Prince’s ninth album Sign O’ The Times, and, seven months after the album’s release, it was included as the b-side for the album’s fourth single, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, and two remixes by Shep Pettibone were included on the 12" (marking the first release of remixes by an outside producer on a Prince release). At around the same time, Hot Thing was available as a promo-only single, containing the edit of the track for radio play. In 1996, the song was also included as the eighth track on the soundtrack album Girl 6 (a compilation of music by Prince and associated artists for the movie Girl 6, directed by Spike Lee). A live version was also included in the concert movie Sign O’ The Times. Hot Thing (Extended Remix) was also included on the 2006 compilation album Ultimate.
Basic tracking took place on 6 August 1986 (the day before the recording of Forever In My Life which follows it on the album), at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It was placed as the eighth and final track on the first disc of the triple-album Crystal Ball on the 30 November 1986 configuration, which was eventually pared down and became Sign O’ The Times.
