I Wish U Heaven is the eighth song on Prince’s tenth album Lovesexy, and, four and a half months after the album’s release, I Wish U Heaven was released as the album’s third and final single. It was not included on the The B-Sides compilation, but was instead included as a b-side on the European single Peach. The extended version, titled I Wish U Heaven (Part 1, 2 & 3), uses lyrics from Housequake in its first section and Take This Beat, recorded a few months earlier, in its final section. The line "Say hello to my little friend" in this extended version is a quote from Brian De Palma’s 1983 film Scarface (this film is also quoted and referenced in the song United States Of Division and sampled in The Flow). Basic tracking took place in on 31 January 1988 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (two days after recording Lovesexy), and was the final track recorded for the album. The melody originates from the initial version of Heaven Must Be Near, recorded the previous month with Ingrid Chavez. Recording and remixing dates for I Wish U Heaven (Part 1, 2 & 3) took place at Townhouse Studios in London, England while on the Lovesexy Tour. This remix incorporates lyrics borrowed from Housequake (on part 2) and the unreleased 1987 track Take This Beat (on part 3).
