Johnny is the fourteenth track (tenth song) on the New Power Generation's first 'solo' album Gold Nigga (the thirteenth track and ninth song on later pressings of the CD). In 2004, a 2002 live version, known as NPG In This Funky House, mostly instrumental but with a clean version of the song's chant, was released on the opening day of the NPG Music Club's Musicology Download Store as part of the Bataclan download.

While specific recording dates are now known, initial tracking took place in August-December, 1992, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions as Black M.F. In The House, Guess Who's Knockin' and the album's segues).

Of note is that this track is the earliest recording to feature Mr. Hayes in the studio.
