Mellow is the seventh track on Prince's 24th album The Rainbow Children, his first album after reverting to the name Prince, and, on 14 January, 2002, the track was offered as a free download from AOL.com to AOL members. In 2002, a live version was included as the fifth track on the first disc of Prince's first live album One Nite Alone... Live! (along with Muse 2 The Pharaoh, The Other Side Of The Pillow and Strange Relationship from the same show).
Specific recording dates are unknown, but it is likely that initial tracking took place in late 2000 or early 2001 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. Horn overdubs were recorded on 8 February, 2001, also at Paisley Park Studios (on the same day as horn overdubs on Everywhere and The Everlasting Now). Lyrics in the track refer to the 17 November, 2000 (am) aftershow concert at Metro, Chicago, IL, USA, which featured Macy Gray and Common as guests on stage. The songs' lyrics also refer to "The Egg", a building on the Paisley Park Studios grounds with an unknown purpose (see Paisley Park Studios for more details).
