My Tender Heart is the sixth track on Rosie Gaines’ third album Closer Than Close (seventh track on the international version). Two and a half years earlier, however, the song was performed on The Ryde Dyvine TV special of Prince and related artists performing at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

The song was initially written as My Tender Love by Rosie Gaines and her husband Francis Jules. Prince covered it and changed the lyrics to My Tender Heart on 6 July 1990 at Metropolis Studios in London, England (on the same day as Pain and Streetwalker). Ricky Peterson is listed as the producer on the Closer Than Close album; he likely provided additional production in 1992 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. This version was included as the fifth track on one 1993 configuration of Rosie Gaines’ planned Paisley Park Records album Concrete Jungle, the fourth track on another 1993 configuration, the fourteenth track on another 1993 configuration and the eleventh track on yet another 1993 configuration, before a version of the album (now released by Dredlix Records) was released on iTunes in 2009. In 1993, My Tender Heart was planned as a single release also, but the single was not released, despite artwork being printed.

Although several songs were recorded by Prince for Rosie Gaines’ first solo album, My Tender Heart is the only track written for the album that was included on the final release (Closer Than Close) in 1995; I Want U, while appearing on the final release, was originally intended for The Pointer Sisters.

In 2009, a recording with Prince on background vocals (and before additional production by Ricky Peterson) was included as the fourth track on her iTunes exclusive album Concrete Jungle.

Prince’s solo version of My Tender Heart was released in October 2023, as the second track of Vault Tracks part 1, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition. The song was mixed by Chris James in 2022 for use on that collection.
