Onedayi’mgonnabesomebody is the third track on The Time’s second album What Time Is It? In 1983, it was included as the b-side of The Walk, the album’s third and final single. The song was written by Prince, although the song is officially credited to The Time. It was produced by Prince (as The Starr Company), but was credited to Morris Day and The Starr Company.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in May-June 1982 at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that produced 777-9311, I Don’t Wanna Leave You, and several other tracks that were released over the next several years). The reason for the condensed title is unknown, but likely due to the intentionally rushed nature of the vocal delivery.
The line "We don’t like new wave" (also repeated in The Walk) followed by hysteric laughs at the end of the song is a dig towards André Cymone who left Prince’s camp the previous year and has just released his first solo album, titled Livin’ In The New Wave (in February 1982).
Although Prince has never performed the song live, John Blackwell regularly triggered a sample from the song’s ending of the chant "We don’t like new wave" during his drum solo on Take Me With U during the Musicology Live 2004ever tour.
