Paradigm was initially available as the only track on the Paradigm CD-R single sold by George Clinton at a live show at the Paradiso, Amsterdam, on 12 July 2001. In 2005, it was included as the third track on the first disc of George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars’s studio album How Late Do U Have 2BB4UR Absent?, and, a week before the album’s release, it was included as the second track on the Sneak Peek EP iTunes exclusive single.
Around the time of the album’s release, a promotional single of Paradigm was available in France, containing an edit of the track. The track is co-written by George Clinton, Tracey "Trey Lewd" Lewis and and co-produced by George Clinton and , who also appears on the track as a singer and musician.
While specific recording dates are not known, George Clinton has said that it originate from the sessions that yielded the Hey Man... Smell My Finger album that took place between 1990 and 1992. George Clinton and worked separately, however, as mentioned by Clinton when discussing the album, who said, "I peed on it, sent it to him, he peed on it, and sent it back". Clinton worked on the song at DARP Studios, Atlanta, Georgia, and recorded his parts at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
