While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in Autumn 1989 - early 1990 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions as Love's No Fun and Ooh This I Need). During a couple of segments of the track, a looped sample is used of the linn drum intro and Prince's vocal count-in from Raspberry Beret (uncredited).
