Modernaire was released as a stand-alone single by Dez Dickerson available in September 2008, although the song had been featured in the Purple Rain movie 24 years earlier and was included on Dez Dickerson’s album A Retrospective 1982-1987 in 2005.
The single was available digitally worldwide, with a vinyl 12" release only available in the UK. In addition to the original recording featuring musical contributions by Prince, it contained multiple new versions of the track, which, although labeled as remixes, did not contain any part of the original recording and are considered here as cover versions. Curiously, though the single is titled Modernaire, the original track is given the alternate title (I Want 2 B A) Modernaire.
The single did not enter the charts.
