Nothing Compares 2 U was the first official posthumous Prince single, released two years after his death. The single contained Prince's original 1984 studio version of Nothing Compares 2 U, a song he gave to The Family for their 1985 album The Family, but which was later covered and made famous by Irish singer Sinead O'Connor.
A digital single was released on 19 April 2018, as a stand-alone single released without prior announcement. An accompanying video was made available at the same time on the official Prince YouTube channel.
A 7" picture disc was made available to order at the same time on the official princehitnrun.com store, in bundles with merchandise bearing the same artwork. A purple vinyl was offered for sale from Minneapolis music store Electric Fetus on 21 April 2018, while a black vinyl version was released on 25 May 2018.
The digital version of the single contained only the full 4:40 version, while the vinyl version also includes a 4:12 edit of the song.
Nothing Compares 2 U was included on Prince’s seventh posthumous album release when it was released in June 2019, but this project is believed to have come later. In retrospect, however, Nothing Compares 2 U can be considered the album’s first single.
A promotional single of Nothing Compares 2 U (with no commercial release) was made available in 1993, but this used the live version of the song from The Hits 1 (also included as the first disc of The Hits / The B-Sides) and different artwork. This single receives a separate single page on our site here.
