Pope was available as a promotional single from Prince’s first compilation albums The Hits 1 and The Hits 2, taken specifically from The Hits 2 (also included as the second disc of The Hits / The B-Sides), available in April 1994 following the album’s third and final commercial single, Controversy (also following the independent release of The Most Beautiful Girl In The World). The promotional single was issued in the UK and Spain only.
The UK edition of the single contained remixes of the tracks Pope and Pink Cashmere, neither of which contained any new input by Prince, and neither of which was released commercially or available elsewhere. The 'reggae' version of Pink Cashmere was created by by DJ Brother Jules with additional vocals by Minneapolis reggae artists including Prince Jabba. This release was withdrawn and recalled by Warner Bros. shortly after being sent to DJ's and radios. The spanish edition of the single contains only the version of Pope available on The Hits 2 and The Hits / The B-Sides.
