The One is a promotional single given to radio stations on 13 April 1998 as the first release from Newpower Soul, the third album by The New Power Generation.
No commercial release was available, although it is likely that a commercial release was planned, as a remix of The One was made (and later included on the Come On single).
Interestingly, the promotional artwork states that the Newpower Soul album would be in stores on 15 May 1998, although the album was not released until 30 June 1998. The artwork also promotes both Come 2 My House by Chaka Khan, and GCS 2000 by Graham Central Station, which were released in late 1998 and early 1999 respectively on NPG Records.
Unlike the other singles by The New Power Generation, the cover of The One features a prominent symbol, which gives it the appearance of a single released under the name of (or & The New Power Generation) instead of The New Power Generation only.
A promotional release was also available in Brazil; strangely, although the second track was labeled as "The One (Album Version)", it was actually the album version of Mad Sex.
The single was not eligible for sales charts, but reached number 44 on the US Billboard R&B Radio Airplay Chart.
