Spirit is the second track on Martika’s second album Martika’s Kitchen, and, the year after the album’s release, Spirit was available as a promotional single (the album’s fifth and final single overall), with no commercial release. In 1997, it was included as the ninth track on the compilation album The Best Of Martika: More Than You Know. In 1998, it was included as the tenth track on the compilation album I Feel The Earth Move (released in Germany only). In 2005, it was included as the fifth track on the compilation album Love... Thy Will Be Done.
Tracking was on 11 January 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (on the same day as Martika’s Kitchen and Open Book). In early 1991, Martika overdubbed her lead vocals and her musicians and vocalists added overdubs to the track, in New York and Los Angeles. In the liner notes for the expanded 2018 re-release of Martika’s Kitchen [Reheated Edition], Martika discussed the song’s recording:"The original inspiration for Spirit came from a play that I was in called Pepper Street. My character’s name was "Spirit", and she meets an apprentice angel in heaven’s waiting room. Since I was a little girl, I always had the imagery of angels around me, invoking this visual in a song seemed comforting to me."
Prince’s version of Spirit was released in October 2023 as the third track of Vault Tracks part 2, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition.
