Spirit is the second track on Martika's second album Martika's Kitchen, and, the year after the album's release, Spirit was available as a promotional single (the album's fifth and final single overall), with no commercial release. In 1997, it was included as the ninth track on the compilation album The Best Of Martika: More Than You Know. In 1998, it was included as the tenth track on the compilation album I Feel The Earth Move (released in Germany only). In 2005, it was included as the fifth track on the compilation album Love... Thy Will Be Done.
Although specific recording dates are unknown, basic tracking took place in December 1990 or early 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions as Martika's Kitchen, Don't Say U Love Me and Open Book and Go On (Witcha Bad Self)). In Spring 1991, Martika overdubbed her lead vocals and her musicians and vocalists added overdubs to the track, in New York, NY, USA.
