The Belle Of St. Mark is the first track on Sheila E.’s first album The Glamorous Life, and, six months after the album’s release, The Belle Of St. Mark was released as the album’s third and final single. In 1986, the extended Dance Remix version was included as the fourth and final track on The Glamorous Club Dance EP, a Japan-only EP of extended versions of Sheila E.’s singles. The song was written by Prince and was based on the rhythm track and a synth hook of a song written by Jesse Johnson in 1981. The Belle Of St. Mark is credited to Sheila E. only and Jesse Johnson is credited as co-writer of Shortberry Strawcake, a song on which he did not contribute.
Basic tracking tentatively took place on 10 February 1984, presumably at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, although there is indication Prince spent two days back in Minneapolis on 10-12 February 1984.
Sheila E.’s vocals were recorded in the first few days of April 1984 at Sunset Sound.
