The Big Pump is the eighth track on George Clinton’s second and final Paisley Park Records album Hey Man... Smell My Finger, and, around the time of the album’s release, The Big Pump was available as a promotional single sent to radio in Germany. The song was written and produced by Prince and George Clinton.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in late 1989 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (around the same time as Soul Psychodelicide). It was included as the fourteenth track on a 1992 configuration of the album, which was changed significantly before release.
