The Ghetto is an unreleased cover version of the track by Donny Hathaway (released initially as a single and later included on Everything Is Everything, 1970), recorded in late November 1987 or early December 1987, most likely at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The Ghetto was planned for Sheila E.’s fourth album on Paisley Park Records.
The song is a loose interpretation of the Donny Hathaway track, almost like a jam with improvised lyrics that name check Boni Boyer, Levi Seacer, Jr. and Miko Weaver. It is not clear if they contributed to this recording however. The songs Soul Company and Girl Power (both recorded in November 1988 and also intended for Sheila E.’s album) are mentioned in the lyrics, which may indicates that additional recordings (at least vocal overdubs) on The Ghetto took place in November 1988, after these two songs were recorded.
The Ghetto was included as the eighth track on a 1989 configuration of Sheila E.’s planned fourth album, which was ultimately abandoned, and the track remains unreleased.
